The Stamptastic Friends are sharing our monthly blog hop today where the theme is monochrome ! So I’ve opted to make this simple monochrome birthday card with you for inspiration. Typically monochrome is just black and white but you can use any colour and just use different tones of it. For example you could go with Night of Navy, Balmy Blue and Azure Afternoon – all lovely shades of blue.

Beautiful Butterflies is my stamp set choice and is brand new to the 2025-26 annual catalogue. It has 3 butterfly images in differing sizes and there are some co-ordinating dies and an embossing folder too. My chosen ink is memento black along with basic white cardstock and a couple of strips of black cardstock.

Let’s get making the monochrome birthday card

First off, cut your card base measuring 28.9cm by 21cm and score on the shorter side at 10.5cm. The masking paper is super handy as it allows me to layer up on the butterfly stamping. Stamp the medium sized butterfly in black onto the masking paper, cut around the image and peel off the backing paper.

Cut out stamped image of a butterfly using black ink

Place the sticky butterfly to one side and stamp one butterfly onto your card front. This will be slightly set in as you are going to cut around the edge of the butterflies at the end.

Place the sticky butterfly on top of the first butterfly image. Now stamp another butterfly partially overlapping the first butterfly.

Now move the sticky butterfly onto the next stamped image and repeat the above until you have a butterfly row.

Next, cut around the edge of the butterflies to remove the edge of the card front and create your border. Trim a piece of black cardstock and glue on to the now exposed edge of the inside of the card. My piece measured approximately 2cm by 14.8cm. You may need to adjust the 2cm width depending on far in your butterfly edge is. Essentially the strip should cover the inside layer to just behind the butterfly border edge on the front. This just makes the butterfly border really pop out.

Finishing touches – add the greeting and some embellishments

The last step is to create your ‘happy birthday’ greeting and in keeping with the monochrome theme I opted for black card with white embossing. This one of my go to options for adding a greeting to a card as it just looks so classy and professional.

Last of all add a couple of little brass butterfly embellishments alongside the row of butterflies. Also, the stamped dots on the envelope flap looks so pretty and will make the recipient smile when it pops through their post box.

Thank you so much for joining me today and please do pop round and see the other fabulous projects my Stamptastic Friends are sharing today.

Inky hugs, Carrie x
